Thought it might be of interest to some of you what the experience was like in general at Tweed Heads for the Indoor Championships cos’ hopefully lots more of us will make it next year!
We got up there-relieved to have a break from work and wandered down the road to the Tweed Heads Bowls Club where they were very welcoming- telling us to jump on the carpet and practice as much as we liked. I felt the practice was as much an exercise in getting to know the general feel of the carpet, finding the speed where the carpet was joined and the like, more than determining how each rink ran. They told us that the rinks would be changed for the actual comp, so there was no point in taking in the run of particular rinks. One thing that is overwhelming is how hot it is on the carpet and under the lights. It’s a very humid heat and lots of water needs to be had!!
We watched the PBA comp where others like Geoff Maskell and Barrie Lester trying to qualify to the English, Scottish and Welsh comps at Potters-Barrie got through-and it was great to see the level of competition with Brett Wilke playing incredible draw bowls.
Anyway back to the Australian Indoor Comp – got out on the rink to play Lisa Prideaux – a good bowler from Cabramatta and was feeling ok except for the heart rate settling in at about 30 beats a minute from where it should be. First set went ok but still felt that I didn’t have a good rhythm even though I had taken it 8-6. Got slaughtered, 3-12 in the second set but was thinking about the tie-breaker from half way through the set. I think I should have been thinking about my rhythm rather than the possibility of winning-a few basic mistakes that probably lost me the set. Got to the tie-breaker and basically didn’t play the shots I would have been more comfortable playing but went for the so-called “safe shots”. Talking about it later Robbie pointed out that I should have been looking at the wider picture at the second end of the tie –breaker rather than whether to play a safe shot. I was 3 down after the 1st end, three up until Lisa put in a good bowl to put me one down-I should have tried to punch her bowl through-which would be a normal shot for me but decided to play safe. A great lesson in playing your own shots. I ended up one down on the head and 4 down overall.
Basically I had to make a four on the last end and couldn’t get there and – that was it! All done in about 2 hours after months of build up and tension. It gets even hotter out there in the middle of the competition and your brain gets overwhelmed with options at times. I think this is where the experience of competition comes in. We stayed and watched Karen Murphy go out, then Julie Keegan, Lyndsay Armitage and Anthony Kiepe, Barrie Lester with the eventual winners being Katriona Wright and Brett Wilke.
Watching the finals you realize how claustrophobic and terrifying it becomes with the crowd squashed into about 2 feet outside each boundary of one rink, with the cameras going up and down overhead and 2 other cameras set up outside the rinks. You realize that you would be restricted to one side of the rink if you trailed the jack to the edge of the rink because the crowd is set too close to play onto what would be another rink normally. So all in all it was a a great experience.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board for the financial assistance they gave as (unless you took the sponsored accommodation) no remuneration was given for airfares or accommodation-lunch(at THBC) and accommodation was provided until you were eliminated from the competition and then you were paying your own way. This would make it difficult for anyone who was not employed to do this so the support of the club is essential. Maybe we need to lobby Bowls Victoria to encourage more Victorian Bowlers to enter and then be sponsored for at least the airfares to get to the competition to represent the State. Food for thought !!
Thanks again Tara
