Bowled Over The Summer Series

After a sold out debut event at the St Kilda Bowls Club back in February 2011, Tone Deaf will return to the iconic venue early in 2012 with the first of their Bowled Over – Summer Series.

This series will be your little Oasis this summer offering you laid back afternoons with eclectic mixes of bands and DJs, a steady supply of cheap beers and ciders, tasty BBQ delights & barefoot bowling competitions giving you the chance to win brand spanking new pairs of Chuck Taylors thanks to Converse.

Bowled Over kicks off on Australia Day with a party to help celebrate Triple J’s Hottest 100 Countdown on Thursday 26th January followed by a killer lineup featuring Kingswood, Crooked Saint, Dirt Farmer & July Days on Sunday 12th February for St Kilda Festival offering you a safe haven away from the foreshore.

Our green is just having a rest after a magnificent start to the season, it has been top-dressed, scarified and well watered. It will re-open for pennant on the 14th of January and for social bowling on the Sunday 15th. We wish everyone a terrific 2012 and we will see you all in the new year.

All members are encouraged to attend and share in the celebrations in what has been a trying but finally rewarding year.

We have come a long way in the last few months, and we are finally running at full steam once again, lets hope that the future

brings us prosperity,  good luck, and success in all sporting pursuits.

Get down to the club from 6:30 for the start of festivities, share a drink, have a laugh, and be merry, wishing you all, a very Merry

We will have food and drink supplied and will have representatives from Parks Victoria, Bowls Victoria, Port Phillip Council, the local Boonwurrung tribe and even Sam Fischer from the St.Kilda Football Club.
After the opening ceremony normal Saturday pennant will recommence.
From Sunday 27th the green will be available for barefoot social & casual bowlers.

An afternoon High Tea of club sandwiches, cupcakes and champayne will be served. And throughout the day there will be a vintage lucky dip, roving photographers and a surprise soundtrack of 60′s, 70′s and 80′s favourites.

And ladies, after the kitty’s been emptied, you are more than welcome to enjoy a game of bowls on the St Kilda green (bookings through the club).

The 20-year-old leg-spinner – known to his teammates as ‘Stevie T’ – first turned up to training as a 12-year-old who lived locally and just wanted to have a hit in the nets. The following season he returned and started bowling huge turning leg breaks that immediately grabbed the attention of club stalwart and 3rd XI skipper Peter Mitchell. In his customary gruff manner, Mitchell asked Stevie: “where the hell did you learn to do that?” Stevie’s flat bat reply? “From a book.”
Indeed, Stevie had been learning his craft over the winter months by replicating what he had seen in a Shane Warne coaching manual.

Within a month Stevie was playing in Peter’s team and by season’s end he was the youngest player in club history to play in a premiership, aged just 13. And he wasn’t just a bit player either, taking three wickets in the semi final followed by another three in the grand final.

With a real passion for the game Stevie quickly developed under the tutelage of Mitchell and within two years was representing the club’s first grade in Menzies Shield. At 15, he was the youngest player in club history to do so.

Earlier this year fellow leg-spinner Adrian Mitchell put together a video package showcasing Stevie’s unique ability in entering a Cricket Australia talent search. While not successful in gaining a place at the Academy, he did garner the attention of Cricket Australia officials, who invited him to join the training squad for South Africa. After impressing in trial matches, Stevie was rewarded with selection for the tour.

Although a veteran of 86 matches over 8 seasons, Stevie is still the youngest player at Emerald Hill and is looked upon as a little brother to all. Hence all at the club are extremely proud of all he has achieved and, like Stevie himself, greatly appreciative of all the time and effort Peter and Adrian Mitchell put in to get him there.
